the alliance
strong alliance, strong help

Responsible buyers and suppliers partner with successful systems and solutions in a multi-stakeholder collaborative alliance to offer effective help.
A number of organizations have signed the appellando declaration for protecting human rights and the environment throughout supply chains and joined our alliance. As supporters, they have the opportunity to participate in our multi-stakeholder working groups and promote the commitments of the alliance in their networks.
about us
harmonized and effective grievance mechanisms
appellando is a global alliance for harmonized and effective grievance mechanisms in supply chains.
As a multi-stakeholder partnership, it organizes solutions to better protect human rights and the environment in supply chains of its alliance partners.

our mission
It is our mission to ensure that individuals in our supply chains have easy access to help and effective remediation in response to human rights or environmental risks violations.
our vision
A strong alliance, strong help – All supply chain partners and actors together with successful complaints mechanisms and solutions collaborate as a multi-stakeholder alliance – the appellando alliance – to offer effective help in local and global supply chains, across businesses, commodities, industries, sectors, and geographies

our values
We follow the eight (self-)commitments of the “appellando Declaration” for working together throughout the supply chain towards globally harmonizing Rules of Procedures among existing local and national private helpline services, avoiding unnecessary duplication.
The EHI Retail Institute together with a group of retailers started this initiative and founded the appellando GmbH.
The objective has been to establish a multi-stakeholder alliance that designs and implements industry-wide grievance mechanism services in response to new supply chain due diligence legislation, in particular the requirement to establish effective grievance mechanisms and access to remedy as referred to in the German Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG) and the EU Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD).

committee structure
The appellando Alliance is managed by a limited liability company based in Germany, named appellando GmbH. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of the EHI Retail Institute, a non-profit think tank for retailer and their suppliers.
The company is set out to have a Multi-stakeholder Advisory Board (MAB) that includes representatives from diverse groups of stakeholders through different Stakeholder Committees (SCs) and is supported by a number of National Multi-Stakeholder Dialogues. The MAB establishes the international rules and processes for the grievance mechanism platform and represents the interests of all stakeholders.

appellando GmbH
The company appellando GmbH (Limited Liability) develops, coordinates, and implements the business plan, considering the decisions by the Finance and Governance Committee on financial matters and the recommendations of the Multi-Stakeholder Advisory Board regarding the content of the rules and procedures.
It functions as the overarching organization of the system in daily operations, acts as a legal entity for the appellando alliance, and serves as a counterpart for legal contracts and agreements.
It facilitates and moderates the board, committees, and working groups.
EHI Retail Institute
(via EHI-Verwaltungsgesellschaft mbH)
The EHI Retail Institute, a non-profit membership-based thinktank for the retail sector and its suppliers, is the sole shareholder of appellando GmbH. It provided the initial capital and asumes economic and financial risks. Additionally, it shares services such as office space, personnel, and accounting infrastructure with appellando GmbH.
Multi-Stakeholder Advisory Board (MAB)
The Multi-Stakeholder Advisory Board serves as the principal entity within the multi-actor partnership. It offers strategic and political guidance to appellando management, endorses the appellando Rules of Procedure, participates in the Finance and Governance Committee alongside the shareholder, and initiates and supervises internal evaluations and performance assessments. The members of the MAB are elected by all standing Sector Committees.
National Multi-Stakeholder Dialogue (NMSD)
The NMSD includes all signatories of the appellando declaration and invited stakeholders in a specific sector of a given country. Its primary function is to identify national, political, or project-oriented solutions to grievances that indicate systemic causes for recurring human rights violations or environmental risks due to their nature and frequency.
Additionally, it evaluates and addresses overarching issues in the grievance mechanism system by submitting proposals to the Stakeholder Committees (SCs) and the MAB for continuous improvement of the appellando system. It may also raise funds for regional and national joint projects and aims to cooperate with national multi-stakeholder initiatives.
Stakeholder Committees (SC)
Stakeholder Committees aim to achieve alignment among organizations within the same stakeholder group and select their delegates for the Multi-stakeholder Advisory Board. Stakeholder groups that may establish their own Stakeholder Committees include employers/producers, worker representatives, national and multinational buyers/retailers, helpline operators, certification standard owners, social and environmental non-governmental organizations, IT service companies, and international governmental organizations.
Finance and Governance Committee (FGC)
The Finance and Governance Committee ensures the alignment of interests between the MAB and the shareholder EHI. It is responsible for adopting annual business plans and commissioning and accepting financial audits.
